The proposal is fake.
The guy is fake — he kneels to give the ring while in his heart he arrogantly stands upright.
The lady is fake — all she cares about is the attention, and that she finally has something ‘of worth’ to share with friends. “And this guy,” thinks Lady, “seems to be growing cash…”
The courtship is fake. Either or both of them are pretending. Less than half their hearts is in it.
And then comes the fake wedding, ostentatiously organized to impress people.
After this comes the fake honeymoon, celebrated in high-res pictures of faces with plastic smiles splashed on Facebook.
Finally comes the real world called marriage. It can’t be faked. It stubbornly refuses to even tolerate a little fakery.
Reality will always call fantasy to order.
Marriage is as real as the poop of a five-months old baby, but can also be as real as the sweet laughter of her daddy ricocheting on the apartment’s walls as he cleans it all up.
Marriage makes the fake smiles heavier on you than a mile-long bar of tempered steel, but can make the genuine smile a scented ointment sprayed upon your friends.
One is for the heady, the other is for the ready.
Do you want to be trendy, or ready?
The bills cannot be faked, neither can pregnancy or the tears of frustrations that come after disappointments.
Then you start to ask, “Was it really love that I felt? Was it really love that he had for me? Why am I trapped in a dark pod with someone whose face I can’t recognize anymore?”
One hot tear for a people that have mastered the art of wedding so perfectly but have no idea at all what marriage is.
A new nation that thinks a home is as happy as the fancy pictures of the couple on Instagram…
The generation raised to be flashy, hasty, frivolous, disrespectful and crass is surprised that the reality called marriage isn’t working for it.
I’m surprised that you are surprised!
