Jorginho will snub Manchester City for Chelsea because the midfielder is not keen on living in Manchester, according to Napoli boss Aurelio De Laurentiis.
City were thought to be closing in on a move for Jorginho, and Napoli had accepted a bid from the Premier League champions.
But, Chelsea suddenly entered the transfer race and seem to have convinced Jorginho to snub Pep Guardiola and come to Stamford Bridge.
And remarkably, it seems geography was the main motivation behind Jorginho’s decision to chose Chelsea over City.
‘These offers did not start from Chelsea, but from Manchester City. As a matter of fact, I will apologize to Khaldoon (Al Mubarak), because I found a deal with Khaldoon 15 days ago,’ De Laurentiis said.
‘He called me, we spoke on the phone and I said, ‘OK, I don’t agree with you on A, B, C’. ‘Let’s solve the situation the two of us’, he told me. And we did it, we solved it.
‘However, for personal reasons I won’t get into, the player prefers to live in London rather than in Manchester, I can understand him.
‘If Chelsea pay him more, I can understand it too. So I can just apologize to Khaldoon.
‘But it does not depend on me. If Jorginho moves to Chelsea, my agreement with Abramovich does not depend on (Maurizio) Sarri becoming their next manager.’
City fans will feel aggrieved one of their main targets has decided to join a rival due to location preference.
Guardiola will be hoping to lead City to successive league titles next season, while Chelsea are in the midst of a testing time.
Antonio Conte remains in charge, but Chelsea are working to sack the Italian and bring in Maurizio Sarri as his replacement.
There seems to have been a break through in talks with Napoli over Sarri’s release, but Conte is currently the man taking charge of Chelsea’s pre-season.
Jorginho was spotted boarding a plane to London on Wednesday and Chelsea are confident of landing a £57million deal for both the midfielder and Sarri.
City will have to go back to the drawing board as Guardiola now looks certain to miss out on his top target.
